2018 HOSA State Competition (3/22 & 3/23)

Hello Fellow Officers,

We are in need of volunteers to be judges or room stewards for the upcoming HOSA State CompetitionThe event will be held Thursday, March 22 and Friday, March 23 (various times depending on assignment) at the Hilton Hotel located at 500 W 3rd Ave, Anchorage.

Health Occupations Student Association (HOSA): Future Health Professionals is a high-school organization that develops leadership and technical HOSA skill competencies through a program of motivation, awareness and recognition, which is an integral part of the Health Science Education instructional program. HOSA has 45 chapters across the country including Puerto Rico.  Every year students compete in local, regional, and national leadership competitions.  Attached is an article about HOSA and the partnership with USPHS for more information along with a list of requested volunteer judge assignments.

Events are generally 1 ½ to 3 hours each, and most require 2 judges.  The specific events requiring volunteers are designated above in the 2018 HOSA Judge Assignments pdf attachment indicated by (PHS?).  Experience in the area is preferred but not required, as there are judging rubrics for each event.

Additional information:

What is the difference between a Judge and a Room Steward?

Referring to the Judge Assignment Sheet attached, a “Judge” is someone who scores or evaluates students work. A “Room Steward” is a responsible adult who makes sure the event is running smoothly. In some cases subject matter knowledge is also helpful for the room steward. There are also several events which require volunteers to be mock “Patients.”

How will I know what to do to judge/be a room steward?

Go to  http://www.hosa.org/guidelines and download and read the event that you are judging/room stewarding.

There will also be 3 separate opportunities to get an orientation on being a judge or room steward. The first 30 minutes will be about judging and the final 30 will be about being a Room Steward. Feel free to attend whatever applies to you, or both if you prefer.
