The Sexual Orientation and Gender Diversity Advisory Group (SOAGDAG) is seeking motivated PHS officers to serve a three-year voting membership term beginning January 1.  It is a great opportunity for leadership development. Members who previously served as voting members of SOAGDAG are encouraged to self-nominate for a second term.

The mission of SOAGDAG is to provide advice and consultation to and on behalf of the Office of the Surgeon General on the following:  1) Issues of and concern to lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender officers, other sexual and gender minorities, and their allies (hereafter, LGBT) in PHS, 2) Issues relating to personnel policies and practices relevant to LGBT officers, and 3) provision of LGBT-competent healthcare by PHS providers.

SOAGDAG currently meets every other month; travel is not required for membership, as conference calling is available. Regular attendance at meetings is required. SOAGDAG voting members are expected to actively participate in SOAGDAG activities to include chairing/co-chairing Committees or workgroups throughout the term of service.

SOAGDAG will recommend successful candidates to the Surgeon General for a 3-year appointments, with the concurrence of the line supervisors and OPDIV/STAFFDIV representatives.

Officers are encouraged to self-nominate by submitting the following items as one Adobe PDF file to CDR Justin Peglowski at Justin.Peglowski@ihs.gov and LCDR Grant McElwee at Grant.McElwee@ihs.gov by August 2, 2019. Nominations not submitted as one PDF file by the deadline will not be accepted.

Components of the Application:

  1.    SOAGDAG Voting Member Application Form
  2. A brief statement of interest in becoming an SOAGDAG voting member, to include a description of your past and current involvement with SOAGDAG and any other PHS groups such as a PAC, JOAG, Ensemble, etc. (no longer than 2 pages, using Times New Roman 12 pt font, with 1 inch margins).
  3. Curriculum Vitae
  4. Your supervisor’s concurrence (utilizing the attached Supervisory Approval form) OR documented reason for why supervisory concurrence is unavailable (e.g., fear of reprisal for LGBT identity)
