Subject: NPM 2020: In light of the current pandemic, what new considerations should my family disaster plan address?

Planning for a disaster is different this year because of the need to protect yourself, your family, and others from COVID-19. At HHS, we want everyone to have the information needed to be ready for a disaster within the current pandemic environment.

Updating your disaster plan to address specifics COVID-19 situations will help your family prepare for the unexpected.

Your family disaster plan includes contact information for each member of your family, the location of your emergency meeting place, your evacuation route and sheltering options, plans for taking care of pets, and more. This year, make sure you update your plan to include:

  • Alternate evacuation/sheltering plans if a member of your family is COVID-19 positive.
  • Special considerations for evacuating/sheltering family members who are at increased risk of severe illness from COVID-19.
  • Safety precautions to avoid exposure to COVID-19 while using public transportation to evacuate.

If you are COVID-19 positive, you may not be allowed to stay in the shelter. If you are COVID-19 positive, or have a family member is at increased risk for severe illness, consider alternate sheltering options, such as a hotel or the home of a family member or friend.
