Papers of Interest to USPHS Commissioned Corps:

  1. USPHS Corps Care: Force Health Protection for Public Health Officers During the Ebola and COVID-19 Responses

This case study co-authored by OSG’s RADM Orsega and CAPT Guyton discusses Corps Care program to enhance Commission Corps officers’ resilience and its role in the Corps’ response to Zika and COVID-19.

  1. Challenges in Translating National and State Reopening Plans Into Local Reopening Policies During the COVID-19 Pandemic

This commentary offers recommendations for translating national-level COVID-19 reopening plans for local public health leaders. Authors suggest that success depends on local leaders’ strong voices to influence policy makers.

  1. The Immediate Effect of COVID-19 Policies on Social-Distancing Behavior in the United States

This study used innovative Google mobility analyses to compare the effectiveness of various mandatory policies for social distancing during early COVID-19 pandemic. Authors find that state-wide stay-at-home orders and bars/restaurants limits were effective, while other interventions, such as local stay-at-home orders, nonessential business closures, bans on large gatherings, and school closures, were not.

  1. Perceptions of Public Health Priorities and Accountability Among US Mayors

Mayors have considerable influence on the health policy in their cities. This study assesses US mayors’ perceptions, attitudes, and priorities related to public health. Results should help public health researchers and practitioners more effectively communicate their research and recommendations to local policy makers.
