AK Engineering and Science Fair Announcement

Just a reminder…The 2019 Alaska Science & Engineering Fair is on Saturday March 30th at the Northway Mall.

Please consider helping judge science projects. The Alaska Science & Engineering Fair staff and the hundreds of student entrants could really use your help!

This is a great opportunity to engage with our local future scientists.

Your assistance is important for many reasons.

  • In the past, kids have waited up to 3 hours (sometimes more) for someone to review and judge their efforts because there weren’t enough judges. We’ve had a big impact for many years and wait times have dropped significantly.  Just a few hours of your time can make a difference.
  • Your status as an officer and background in science fields really has an impact in encouraging and motivating young minds to pursue science related careers.
  • Also, in discussing their projects with entrants, your knowledge and expertise will improve their comprehension of and guide their understanding of the scientific method.
  • Finally, because of our awesome volunteer team’s flexibility, we make it much easier for the organizers to balance the judging workload and really reduce wait times for entrants.

If interested please join us on Saturday March 30th, 2019 from 8 am (or whenever you can get there)!  A link to volunteer or to learn more about getting involved is provided here, https://alaskasciencefair.org/teachers-mentors/information-for-judges/. The organizers prefer PHS Officers register directly with them to speed up coordination on the morning of the judging, but please remember to respond to this e-mail as well so I can keep my list up to date and can coordinate Letters of Appreciation (LOAs) for the group. If this is your first time, many of your questions will be answered at the page listed above. If you have questions not covered, I might be able to fill in the gaps.

Please note, this opportunity is open to all interested parties (not only COA members). Also, please don’t let the word “Engineering” in the title scare you off. The number of “Engineering” category projects is actually quite small. So, there is a need for judges in all science-related professions, not just Engineering.

I invite you to come out, make this year even more successful than the last, and help us find the best Public Health related projects!

If you have specific questions not covered in this e-mail or the referenced websites, feel free to e-mail or call me.
