REMINDER: Changes to Post-9/11 GI Bill Transferability

Dear Commissioned Corps Officers,

The Department of Defense issued a mandatory change to the Post-9/11 GI Bill.  Beginning Friday, July 12, 2019, officers with more than 16 years of creditable active duty uniformed service will no longer be able to transfer education benefits.  If you currently have 15 or more years of service, and would like to transfer your education benefits to an eligible family member, please submit a request now.

Important Information Regarding Transferability:

    • You must have six years of creditable active duty service to apply
    • There is a four-year service obligation from the date of your application
      • Effective July 12, 2018, all service members must be able to complete four-year service obligation in order to receive the transfer benefits.
    • You may only transfer education benefits to eligible family members.
      • Any family member not eligible for Defense Enrollment Eligibility Reporting System (DEERS) is not eligible for transfer.
    • Eligibility does not guarantee approval
      • Administrative and adverse actions must be cleared

Instructions, forms, and frequently asked questions (FAQs) are located on the Commissioned Corps Management Information Systems (CCMIS) Education Benefits webpage.

Commissioned Corps Headquarters is in the process of updating forms and policy regarding education benefits transferability.  We will provide updates on the Education Benefits webpage.
