Dear Public Health Service Officers,
We are announcing an exciting opportunity for the United States Public Health Service (USPHS) Commissioned Corps. The Office of the Assistant Secretary for Health has entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Georgetown University Government Affairs Institute (GAI) to allow Public Health Service officers to participate in a Capitol Hill Fellowship Program focused on legislative studies. The GAI offers two sessions of the Fellowship Program per year: a 12-month session, which begins in December and ends in December the next year, and a 7-month session, which begins in December and ends in August the next year. Both sessions begin with a mandatory two-week orientation program.
The Capitol Hill Fellowship Program is designed to train individuals on a high-level working knowledge of Congress. Fellows will receive instruction and hands-on experience on Capitol Hill through training and developmental activities consisting of an intensive orientation, periodic seminars, and attendance at GAI’s Advanced Courses and a Workshop. Fellows serve in an assignment in Congress in Washington, DC.
The MOU has authorized up to two Public Health Service officers to attend the Capital Hill Fellowship program. We have selected one officer to attend this first year as part of a pilot program.
If the pilot is successful, we will advertise the program for all Public Health Service officers in late spring 2021, as applications for the next session are due to GAI by October 31, 2021. I hope that all eligible Public Health Service officers will take advantage of this exciting professional development opportunity.
