PUBLIC HEALTH REPORT 2022 ISSUE 4 CONTENT OF INTEREST TO USPHS:

  1. The Mental Health of Minority and Marginalized Young People: An Opportunity for Action

Commentary by US Surgeon General draws attention to the problem of youth mental health and discusses potential solutions, including those outlined in his recent advisory on the subject, as well as existing success stories.

  1. Characteristics of Adults Who Use Both Marijuana and E-Cigarette, or Vaping, Products: A Cross-Sectional Study, Utah, 2018

Dual marijuana/e-cigarette use in youth is linked to exposure to more potentially harmful substances and poorer mental health than single use. This analysis of 2018 Utah health survey data identifies antecedents and potential harms of dual use, which clinicians and public health practitioners can use to better target preventive messaging.

  1. A Thematic Analysis of Overdose Prevention and Response Efforts in States Experiencing Declines in Rates of Opioid-Involved Overdose Deaths

Qualitative analysis of common themes in the activities of 4 states showing most reduction in opioid overdose mortality identifies comprehensive policies, timely dissemination of key data, and capacity building as key success contributors.

  1. Prevalence of Previous COVID-19 Infection, COVID-19 Vaccination Receipt, and Intent to Vaccinate Among the US Workforce

As businesses reopen after COVID-19, it’s important to understand and address US workforce’s disparities in vaccination coverage and intent. This study uses a large, nationally representative survey of US adults to examine COVID-19 vaccination coverage and intent by essential worker status and employment type. Authors call for employee education, promotion of a culture of health, and building social norms around vaccination to increase vaccine uptake.

  1. Emergency Department and Intensive Care Unit Overcrowding and Ventilator Shortages in US Hospitals During the COVID-19 Pandemic, 2020-2021

Study describes the use of an innovative surveillance system for monitoring the needs of the US health care system and assessing emergency department and ICU overcrowding and ventilator shortages during COVID-19. Authors find that timely assessment of and communication about such needs is key to effective pandemic response.

  1. The Public Health Response to Human Trafficking: A Look Back and a Step Forward

This special issue, sponsored by the HHS Administration of Children and Families, discusses a public health approach to human trafficking (i.e., forced labor or commercial sex), which affects such vulnerable groups as women and racial/ethnic and gender minorities.
